Table 2 Hazard severity levels for accidents in non-application stages of lithium-ion batteries

From: Accidents involving lithium-ion batteries in non-application stages: incident characteristics, environmental impacts, and response strategies

Hazard Severity Level

Description

Classification Criteria

0

No Effect

No effect, no loss of functionality.

1

Reversible Function Loss

No damage or hazard, reversible loss of function.

2

Damage

No hazard. Irreversible loss of function. Replacement or repair needed.

3

Minor Leakage

Evidence of cell leakage or venting with weight loss < 50% of electrolyte weight.

4

Major Leakage

Evidence of cell leakage or venting with weight loss > 50% of electrolyte weight.

5

Rupture

Loss of mechanical integrity of the container, resulting in release of contents.

6

Fire

Ignition combustion of flammable gas or liquid for more than one second.

7

Explosion

Very fast release of energy sufficient that may cause considerable structural bodily damage.
